SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that is used to connect to a web server and execute various tasks through a command line. The protocol is popular with many skilled users, because the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be used for a lot of things with regards to the type of web hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for example, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the server allows it. If you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for practically everything - you can install software or restart certain services including the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is employed mainly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that enable you to employ the protocol if your PC is using a different Operating System too. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though a number of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Web Hosting

If the web hosting package which you’ve selected throughout the signup process offers SSH access by default, you shall be able to activate this feature with only a mouse click within your Hepsia CP. If you've selected a different package, the SSH access function may be included using the Upgrades menu and it will become available at once. The information that you need to connect will be conveniently listed within the SSH section of the CP - the hostname, the username and the port number. You could also set what password to use from the same location and you shall be able to change it whenever you want. All of the commands which are permitted are listed within the Help articles which we've prepared for you, along with examples of the syntax that you must use. An additional advantage of enabling SSH access to your account is that you will be able to upload files through an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is offered by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you could include it via the hosting CP if needed - even only for the current month. Either way, you can activate and de-activate the function with only one click from the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you'll see the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you can easily input the password that you would like to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you can also change it as much as you require. A full list of the commands which can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and several instances. An extra feature after SSH access is enabled will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this type of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Hosting

The virtual private server solutions which we offer provide SSH access as standard, not as an optional upgrade or a feature which you have to activate. The moment your new server is prepared, you shall be able to connect and start working on your content through the login details that you've entered through the order procedure. A copy of the SSH credentials shall be sent to you via e mail too. Since your VPS will be isolated from the others on the physical web server, there are no limitations as to what you can or can't do through SSH. You may download, set up and manage any piece of software which will run on a Linux server, reboot the entire server or just a specific software component, and work with files, folders and databases with virtually no restrictions. All you will need for this is a console or an SSH client on your end.
